Twitter Profile – Research

I was given 24 hours to complete this design exercise given these instructions:

The profile view for any Twitter user has the potential to be the hub of their online identity, and the place others can go to learn who a person is or what’s been happening with them. How would you improve or redesign a user’s profile to better serve both the profile owner and viewers of that profile?

Propose a redesign of a user profile page on Twitter by identifying what is deficient about the current profile page and delivering a proposed solution which includes explanations of how you address those deficiencies.

Your solution should include one proposal for Twitter.com and one for smaller-screen mobile client (such as iPhone, or Android, etc.).

We would like to receive the submission within 24 hours. Use as much or as little time as you feel is necessary to adequately capture your solution. As a guideline, we expect the exercise to likely take 4-6 hours.

We are not looking for production-ready deliverables, but a clear representation of your thought process in arriving at your solution.

This was the deck that I created within that time-frame. I started with researching the profile experience across all available platforms, and proposed three main solutions into the redesign.

Twitter Profile – Solution

This is the second part of the deck that I built where I propose three main solutions based on the research. They included:

1) Making the profile section more prominent to create more importance and personalization.

2) Adding the ability to directly interact with a user through primary controls above the profile to make communication easier and more effective.

3) Using a responsive web design approach to create more consistency across all platforms and solve the issues of the mobile web experience that currently exist.

Runner’s World – Web

These slides are from my Runner’s World case study. In this section I designed wireframes to show the web experience of navigating to the pace calculator tool, along with a proposed mobile web experience using a responsive web design approach. This would create a better consistency across all screen sizes.

Runner’s World – Content Audit

These slides are from my Runner’s World case study. In this section I went through all the current content of the site, then did a card sorting exercise to organize the content based on user needs. This lead to the completion of the content audit and informed the site map.

Quotes

“David is going to be a UX rock star. This guy is going to do big things in the near future and is a sponge for anything relating to user experience. As an intern at Space150, I have seen him do things with prototyping techniques and information architecture that Senior UX Designers should be envious of. I know I am. He is wise beyond his years and understands extremely intelligent concepts around cognitive science, psychology and human-computer behaviors. He’s an awesome guy to work with and I hope we will be on the same team for many years.”

-Jon Hadden, Founder at NiceUX

“When Dave came to space150 with an interest in User Experience, his passion for design and interactive was energizing. Inspired by his obsession to explore the web for resources and post his inspiration, I saw an opportunity for space150 and Dave to bring him in as a UX intern. Throughout his internship, Dave’s understanding and passion for UX grew, as he continued to seek out any opportunity to learn from peers at space, Twin City meet-ups, and even the IA Summit held this year in Colorado. When client work wasn’t pressing, Dave worked on a UX case study to explore UX methodologies and serve as a portfolio piece at the end of his internship. I was pleasantly surprised to see Dave take this opportunity also learn additional tools, including Keynote and Axure, to create iPhone, iPad, and HTML prototypes. Dave has surely proven to be a fast-learning, collaborative, and inspiring designer, and it’s been a joy to see him grow here at space150.”

-Courtney Davis, User Experience Strategist at SEOmoz

“David exhibits the most voracious appetite for UX design knowledge than anyone I’ve ever met. Teach him an inch and he’ll learn (and run), the whole mile. Any firm looking to hire a future industry-changing stalwart UX’er should scoop Mr. Mahmarian.”

-Justin Peddycoart, Experience Designer at Doejo
